Christian Boulanger has been working with the Labets for 15 years and is part of the family, a third sibling for Charline, Romain and Julien. Despite having imported the Labet wines for almost two decades we had to go all the way to Copenhagen to drink our first bottle of Allante Boulanger. A splendid Phenomaynal 2014 at the must-visit Barabbas restaurant.

Christian and his friend Mathieu Allante have been gathering small parcels over the years, patiently waiting for opportunities, leasing, buying, clearing land and recovering abandoned vineyards. They are two men for two cellars: one in Rotalier where Christian lives and one at Mathieu’s in Gizia 15km south, a set up somehow practical since their vines are in between these two villages.

Their day job is still their main source of income and they make a point of being financially independent, without pressure from banks or anyone else for that matter. They want to be able to take risks and avoid compromising to fully express their sensitivity and creativity making sulphur-free wines from sustainable farming.

This is an exciting project with a clear progress margin, and we are proud of supporting Mathieu and Christian on their path to excellence.

PHENOMAYNAL 2016

90% Chardonnay, 10% Savagnin (12% alc.)

Old vines of chardonnay on red marl in the village of Maynal, this parcelle was taken over in 2005 at the start of Christian and Mathieu’s project, having previously been worked by their mate Fanfan (JF Ganevat). In 2016 this cuvée was spiced up with a touch of savagnin from La Bardette, before two years ageing on fine lees in 10yo demi-muids. This wine has a moreish and voluptuous texture perfectly balanced by zingy bitters. The emblematic and catchy label was drawn by a close friend, the depicted hand combines the sensual and feminine side of wine with the rough manual work of a vigneron(ne).

AMALGAMÉ 2017

40% Petit Béclan, 40% Gamay, 20% Poulsard (12% alc.)

“Virtually extinct Jura vine” is how Jancis, Julia and José describe the petit béclan in their book of reference Wine Grapes. Planted with some gamay and poulsard on a southern exposed clayey slope in the village of Gizia, its small bunches and thick skin bring rusticity to this atypical Jura blend. Totally destemmed and cofermented, aged in 300ltr barriques, it has a dense and grippy structure with ripe black fruit and moreish acids. For drinking now to 2023.

SAVAGNIN 2016

100% Savagnin (12% alc.)

Mathieu and Christian recovered a historical terroir in Gizia at 400m altitude, turning a once-prestigious south-facing amphitheatre from fallow land to cultivated field, and in 2011, planting savagnin vert et jaune on grey marlstone and schist. Aged for two years in old barrels, this is deep and rich, with a perfectly pitched oxidation which makes for a versatile wine when it comes to food matching.
