All Beaujolais roads lead to Sylvain Chanudet. You will come across him and his Domaine de Prion wines when visiting other vignerons’ cellars and vineyards as well as bistrots and cafés through the region. His ubiquity is certainly due to his bonhomie but also his day job, a nursery that supplies the region's best winemakers with top quality massal selections, inherited from a long-established family of local vignerons.

Sylvain, and his extended family, live on a high south-east-facing slope of Fleurie called Prion where he selects some of the oldest and best located vines for the domaine bottlings, as well as selling off to micro-negociants (e.g. Le Grappin).

He gives his age-worthy wines plenty of time to mature through oak and bottle ageing. The style of his amazing wines is muscular with concentrated fruit balanced by old vine mineral print.

FLEURIE 2014
La Madone
100% Gamay (12.5% alc.)

50 to 60yo vines here on the famous hillside with just 30cms of soil above the granite bedrock. Aged in cement, with just one bottling after 11 months, this is a slightly more rustic, bigger framed wine than Chanudet's. The fruit has good depth and is spicy (liquorice, cloves and nutmeg) with a hint of wild rose too. Starting to pinot a little. For drinking now to 2024+.
