Corinna Faravel's Ventoux vineyards are superbly placed at 300m altitude above the village of Beaumes-de-Venise looking over towards Mont Ventoux. Perched just to the east of the peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail, there is a strong limestone influence in the ochre-coloured iron-rich soil here (with lots of broken up small stones), a terroir radically different than vineyards from the plains below Ventoux. Indeed, the vines here used to be within the Beaumes-de-Venise CDR-Villages AC, but the owner (not the vigneron) of the house situated in the vineyards decided for tax reasons that he preferred to be part of the neighbouring commune. As that was within the Ventoux appellation limits the vineyard was also transferred to the Ventoux jurisdiction.

Corinna Faravel

Corinna emanates from Germany, working at various domaines there before starting to explore red wines in southern France. After studying at the renowned Université du Vin in Suze la Rousse (our Raphaël was also an ex-pupil here!), internships and many discussions she was ready for the next step and purchased the current vineyards in 2002. Losing 100% of her two first vintages due to bad weather was a sobering start.

Since then she has sold a few parcels and added others, planted a few parcels herself (only by massal selection) and completed construction of a new cave and cellar carved into the rocky hillside above the hamlet of Lafare.

After hand harvesting, in the cellar she destalks 90%, the wine ferments and ages in concrete tanks before bottling unfined and unfiltered just before the next harvest. She explains her philosophy, "For me, it has always been a question of finding balance – a fluid goal that requires regular, careful observation in the fields and cellar". There are dynamism and sensitivity to everything that Corinna does, not surprisingly reflected in her wines.

Martinelle

VENTOUX 2017
70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Carignan, 5% Cinsault (14.5% alc)

This is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or more accurately a Rhône-Villages Beaumes de Venise reclassified after the war as a Ventoux. It is a rich, well-balanced wine with hints of liquorice, spice and garrigue herbs nicely cut through by the tempering influence you tend to find on limestone.
