The underrated Côtes du Vivarais (awarded A.O.C. in 1999) stand as a gateway between the Northern and Southern Rhône. Its hills run down the western flank of the Rhône, just south of Montélimar, and mirror those of the Côtes du Rhône on the opposite bank of the river but are cooler and wetter with a longer ripening season.

Alain Gallety and his son David-Alexandre have been tending their vines organically since the early 1980s and simply make the best wines of the appellation, ranking alongside the top Côtes du Rhône Villages estates.

The depth of the wines is helped by the maturity of the vineyards, many vines were planted in the 1970s and some Grenache in the 1930s, as well as the state-of-the-art winery constructed right into the hillside below their high-altitude vineyards.

CÔTES-DU-VIVARAIS 2016
50% Grenache, 50% Syrah (14% alc.)

Gallety are the leading producers in this tiny appellation at the northern end of the southern Rhône. The days and nights here are cooler which helps capture a little more freshness. There is a good, iron-rich, limestone-derived soil that may help to convey freshness and acidity. This cuvée comes from a 40yo massale selection yielding 25hh. Aged in 1-4yo barrels for 15 months, the wine offers ripe blackberry fruit, with black olives, graphite, herbs, spice, tobacco, good acidity, a mineral vibrancy and fine tannins.
