Martine Vandre is one of the owners of Domaine des Entrefaux for whom Champ Morel is an alternative label. She has a clutch of well-placed vines in two very different terroirs, on limestone-based hillsides around Chanos-Curson, and flat alluvial plains in Beaumont-Monteux. The white wine comes from the limestone-clay slopes, whereas the red comes primarily from the alluvial soils, although the addition of grapes from Chanos-Curson adds to its complexity.

Viticulture is respectful of the family’s land where the soil is ploughed, alternating with grass and cover crop. The grapes are all hand-harvested, the fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and the extraction is judicious, followed by a very sensitive élevage in a mix of cuve, old foudres and 5yo barrels.

The red has much more personality and depth than many Crozes, and the white is well balanced with good fruit, not too much alcohol and benefits from a similarly well-judged élevage.

80% Marsanne, 20% Roussanne (14% alc.)

Martine Vandre’s white Crozes is made from a classic mix of 30yo marsanne and roussanne aged in two thirds cuve and one third oak (3-8yo barrels). It offers hints of apricot, quince and mango on the nose, which follow through on the palate, where the controlling influence from limestone helps retain a freshness and dynamism.

100% Syrah (13% alc.)

This excellent wine comes from 30yo vines planted both in alluvial soil in Beaumont-Monteux and clay-limestone hillsides in Chanos-Curson. A deep plum red, it offers a gorgeous nose of mulberries and black cherries enhanced by a well-judged élevage in a mix of old foudres, 5yo barrels and cuve.
