Intro: Southern Rhône

The majority of wines in this section come from 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 vintages. 2011 is a typical southern France vintage – the wines are quite solar in style. The most successful growers have produced delicious wines in 2012 with a good depth of colour, aromatic fruit with a mineral stamp, mid weight structure, medium to full bodied richness and good acidity, lower alcohol than normal and more profound tannins than 2011. According to JLL there is a ‘greater breeze in the fruit, more cut and grip’. After 2013, 2014 produced a larger harvest and has given wines with more freshness, less heat and alcohol, and a pure fresh, forward fruit. It is not a vintage where the wines have sufficient structure for long cellar ageing. 2015 is a classic vintage – the harvest took place quite late in September (three weeks later than the northern Rhône) and the wines have plenty of stuffing and will need time to unravel. At the top end it is very much a vintage for laying down wines in the cellar.
