This is a lovely, delicate style of champagne (22g/l instead of the more typical 24g/l for the secondary fermentation), showing very pure citrus fruits with good energy, a hint of quince, brioche and a saline, mineral flavour. It comes from 30-year-old vines planted in sandstone, clay and chalk in Merfy and is made 60% from the 2013 vintage, 40% from 2012. Disgorged in Oct 2016 with a 5.5g/l dosage. For drinking now to 2019.

One of two of Alexandre’s single vineyard champagnes that we are listing this year, from very rare ungrafted vines planted in 1955 alongside the lieu-dit of Les Barres in sands and limestone over chalk. Initially aged in a 16hl cement egg (so just 1900 bts produced), which Alexandre finds give a finer, more delicate, very terroir driven wine with no easy fruit (think oats, mushrooms, salinity and bitters). It was bottled off in July 2012 and was disgorged last year with a 3g/l dosage. Even in a difficult vintage, can Champagne get any better than this? VLQ. For drinking now to 2020.

Alexandre produced this champagne from vines planted in 1982 in 120cms of sand over a deep layer of clay. Aged in 3 to 6 yr old barrels with malos completed it has a 4g/l dosage. The clay gives body and structure per Alexandre and the sand provides finesse for this exceptional champagne, which has a gorgeous nose, and on the palate a structure which suggests that it will benefit from further ageing, with a teasing complexity and delicacy on the finish. For drinking now to 2020.

A delicate salmon pink, this champagne comes from the 2013 vintage and was aged in a mix of stainless steel and barrels. 15% pinot noir still wine from Orizeaux was assembled to give the colour and it was disgorged in Jan 2017. It is a very elegant rosé, with nuanced, layered red cherry and redcurrant fruit, underlined by subtle notes from the soil. The dosage of 6g/l suits perfectly.
