We managed to prise out miniscule quantities of these two exceptional champagnes from Emmanuel and Bénédicte in Essoyes. Their blanc de blancs comes from quite a high altitude (300m) essentially south facing 0.55h vineyard where limestone is very present with rock outcropping and fossils weathering out on the surface. Bio-d viticulture is practiced here and the 2013 wine was aged in older barrels for eight months, with malos completed, and no sulphur added at any stage, and no dosage either. The pristine citrus fruits on the palate tethered to salty mineral depth clearly reflect their terroir, and the oak is very well integrated. Very limited quantity indeed. For drinking now to 2019.

Here the vineyard is still high up in the hills and has deeper soil, with grey clay dominant mixed with marl that has lots of tiny stones. The vines are between 15-30yo, bio-d tended, debudded and ploughed to give low yields of ripe grapes. Aged in older futs and demi-muids like the Martin Fontaine, the fruit shows wild strawberry and plums, is silky and yet chiselled with a long mineral driven finish. Very limited quantity indeed. For drinking now to 2020.

The lieu-dit of Fosse-Grely was where Benedicte’s father first planted vines back in 1970. Here there is a thin layer of red clay and thick compacted limestone beneath. Aged for nine months in futs and demi-muids, and then for 20 months sur lattes like all of the Ruppert-Leroy champagnes there is a beautiful tension and feeling of controlled energy. Here the fruit is citrus and peach, with notes of fennel and mint, with subtle bitters on a mineral inflected finish. No sulphur. For drinking now to 2020.

This is a perpetual reserve from 11,12,13 and 14 (first started with the cuvee’s named years) where after initial elevage in oak the reserve wines are kept in cuve and blended little by little, before 18 to 20 months in bottle on the lees. You find ripe grapefruit here, with a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg, typical energy and tension, with good length on the mineral infused finish. No sulphur. For drinking now to 2020.

Emmanuel and Bénédicte carried out a four day maceration of whole bunches to make this exquisite rosé. Aged in cuve for nine months, it offers aromas and flavours of stewed cherries, blood orange, with cinnamon and pepper hints. No sulphur.  For drinking now to 2020.
