This comes from 60 year old vines planted in a limestone clay soil with a notable iron influence. Part of the La Chanière vineyard is classed as premier cru and this rich, wellstructured wine with savoury tannins is an excellent example. For drinking now to 2013.

domaine:10 hectares Grape: 100% Pinot noir – 50% of vines planted in 1932, 50% are 30-35 yrs old. 10,000 vines per hectare trained cordon de royat. Clones-777,114,115 on 161.49, 3309c and S04 rootstock. Terroir: Planted on a 20° due south facing slope in limestone clay. The soil is red due to an important iron influence. La Chanière is also a premier cru. Viticulture: Guyot simple. De-buds. Doesn’t like vendanges en verts and so prunes to 7-8 branches per vine and one bunch per branch. Ploughs the soil in the autumn and then cuts back the grass whenever necessary. Sulphur to prevent oidium. No treatments against pests/insects. Organic compost. Averages 40 hectos per hectare. Prefers to harvest later when the grapes are fully ripe. Hand-harvested. Vinification: Destalks 100% but no crushing. Cold-soak for 10-14 days at 10C. Natural yeasts and no chaptalisation. Fermentation starts slowly in cement vats at 20C to 35° max for 6 days. Pigeage twice a day for 5-6 days (no delestage). No enzymes. Total cuvaison 20 days. Pneumatique press. Press wine assembled at start. No heating of cellars for the malo. In certain years carries out batonnage during the winter until malolacatics completed. Aged in 50% new to 4 yr old 225ltr barrels. Adds 5 g/l of S02 at the start – then none added during the elevage. No fining or filtration and small dose of S02 at bottling. Bottled in December after 15 months. Press:
