Decanter Wine Awards 2016

DECANTER AWARDS 2016 - 96/100 Platinum Best in Category

Domaine Rotier, Renaissance -Vendanges Tardives, Gaillac 2012

13.0%   Grape composition: 100% Len de l'El

Incredibly honeyed and rich with beautiful botrytised aromas of golden raisins, dates, dried papaya all laced together with a delicate ginger spice. Richly sweet with beautiful creamy peach, honeyed mango and sweet raisined fruit, yet meanwhile remaining light and fluffy on the palate.

This 35HA vineyard in the historic region of Gaillac is run by brothers-in-law Alain Rotier and Francis Marre.  Rotier’s parents bought the property in 1975 and set about overhauling the decrepit vineyards.  A decade later, with Rotier now part of the team, the decision was made to stop making wine through the local co-operative and set up under their own name.

This Platinum-winning wine is made from Len de l’Elh (aka Loin de l’Oeil), a native grape of the Gaillac region, coming from vines planted on poor, gravelly, well-drained soil at 200m altitude near the River Tarn.

Following a wet spring in 2012, July was fine and dry while August was hot and thundery, but the vines developed well, and rain in September helped initiate noble rot.

The grapes were finally picked during mid-October, and after a fermentation of six to eight weeks in French oak, the wine matured for a further 10 months, again in French oak barrels, 15% new.
