Bérèche & Marguet champagnes

Giles Fallowfield recommends two Vine Trail champagnes in Imbibe July/August 2015:

Bérèche et Fils Vallée de la Marne Extra Brut (£41.50) &
Marguet Père et Fils Amboniacus 2009 Grand Cru Extra Brut (£41.50)

Bérèche et Fils Vallée de la Marne Extra Brut (£41.50)

Grower producer Raphael Bérèche is a founder member of the trailblazing Terre et Vins group.  This expressive, savoury, concentrated cuvée made from 100% Pinot Meunier grown near the winery in the village of Ludes, shows what can be done with the variety when carefully farmed using low-yielding old vines.

Marguet Père et Fils Amboniacus 2009 Grand Cru Extra Brut (£41.50)

Benôit Marguet is one of the most exciting young grower/négociant producers in Champagne.  Based in the grand cru of Ambonnay he farms biodynamically and makes impressive, complex champagnes.  This wine is a 50/50 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay blend and has a purity of fruit and distinct saline chalky note.  It’s a big wine that will become even better with a bit more time in bottle.
