HAMISH ANDERSON Bacchic beauties - The best of summer drinking

2009 Sancerre Rosé - Gérard Boulay Loire Valley £14.50

This is rosé for grown-ups and the answer to those who think that the style cannot be a serious wine. Made from pinot noir, it has haunting flavours of freshly macerated strawberries with a twist of black pepper, but what really sets it apart is a purity and minerality found in the best white examples of this region. Serve with wild salmon.

2008 St-Nicolas de Bourgueil ‘Les Graviers' - Domaine du Mortier, Loire Valley £11.25

Loire reds are always a good bet for summer drinking, as they are at the lighter end of the spectrum. This is an incredibly seductive, silky glass. There is a plush core of pure black fruit augmented by spice, and the lightness of touch makes it a joy to drink. This is too subtle for the rigours of the barbecue; instead look to the delicate meat of new-season lamb.
