Stratigraphic relations around Chateauneuf du Pape. Background hills and quarry in Cretaceous limestones. These are onlapped by Miocene sands that form the gently sloping vineyards in the foreground. These are classified as Cotes du Rhone. Chateauneuf du Pape comes from the slopes in the middle distance that are an early river terrace from the River Rhone that also onlap onto the limestones.
